SAS Update June 2004

Dear SAS Members

The Board of your Club has been busy organizing the upcoming 1st of August celebration. What looked like an easy task turned out to be quite a challenge! Waterworks Park, where we held the event for the past few years, is undergoing major renovation and is therefore not available this summer.
It is hard to find a place that accommodates up to 100 people, offers shelter in case of inclement weather, is conveniently located, and allows serving alcoholic beverages. Not that we are drunkards, but it is still nice to have a glass of wine at our National Day celebration!
Short of giving up we came across Martha Hope Cabin in Gainesville – you will agree that the place is worth the longer than usual drive.
If you know of a venue that would suit our needs for future events, please let us know!

Ladies’ Luncheons
In May we visited the special exhibitions “African Gold” and “The Glories of Egypt” at the High Museum. Barbara Gruenenfelder provided specific and very interesting background information.
Another highlight was the visit to the Carter Center in June. The group got to tour the private part of the Center and enjoyed the museum and library.
If you are interested in joining Ladies’ Luncheons group, please contact any of the Board Members (not necessary if you do get the invitations already).

Thery Widmer
Our longtime member and Board member for many years passed away on May 9 after a long period of suffering and pain caused by cancer. Thery will always be remembered by those who knew her not only as a tireless helper in the Club but also as a great friend. Our thoughts are with her husband Othmar and daughter Nadia.

New Members
Please welcome Christian and Faith Schilling with their children Olivia and Alexander, living in Dacula, to the Swiss American Society - we are looking forward to meeting you at one of our next events!

Member Directory
The directory of the members who agreed to share their contact information is available now. You can  order it electronically from Eleonore Mabouka, emabouka@hotmail.com, or pick up a copy at the next event.

SAS Mailings
If you prefer to get your invitations and mailings by e-mail please contact our Secretary Sybille, hoggi@mindspring.com, or any other Board Member. Make sure we always have your actual address! You would help your Club reduce the cost for print and postage.
